Commemorative Life/Death Mask | plaster cast - Free service

As of right now, this is a free service provided to the community, where a plaster mold is made from the face of the decedent in order to create a cast of their exact likeness. The final plaster product is then refined by the artist and/or painted, and then sealed and delivered to the family. This funerary mask can be made pre and post mortem.

This historic art of commemoration originated in ancient Egypt, where stylized masks would be created for the burial of the dead and placed over the face to protect the body, but were not copies of an actual likeness. Later, in Rome, the practice of plaster or wax “death masks” became a common practice, making it’s way across Europe and continuing into the 19th century until it was phased out by the invention of photography and shifting trends in memorialization. Funerary masks were not only kept as snapshots commemorating and immortalizing the faces of historical figures such as Dante and Marie Antoinette, but were made by artists to use as references for sculpting busts and painting portraits for memorial.

This specific service produces a traditional plaster funeral mask of the face. The plaster cast is free for the family to keep.
